DESCRIPTION:This webinar\, hosted by the ITU's AI for Good community\, l
ooks at how the efficiency of machine learning (ML) can address the princi
ple challenges of green sustainable economy. From the webinar description:
Today\, both science and industry rely heavily on machine learning models
\, predominantly artificial neural networks\, that become increasingly com
plex and demand a significant amount of computational resources. The probl
em of model computational complexity is well known to the computer science
community\, yet existing methods typically attempt to solve it by shrinki
ng the models\, for example by quantizing them\, or limiting their access
to resources. In this talk\, the speaker will look holistically at the ef
ficiency of machine learning models and draw inspiration to address their
main challenges from the green sustainable economy principles. Instead of
constraining some computations or memory used by the models\, the speake
r will focus on reusing what is available to them: computations done in t
he previous processing steps\, partial information accessible at run-time\
, or knowledge gained by the model during previous training sessions in co
ntinually learned models. This new research path of zero-waste machine lea
rning opens a plethora of research opportunities\, both for academia and i
ndustry.Learning ObjectivesBy the end of this session\, participants will
be able to:Understand the key challenges related to computational complexi
ty in modern machine learning models and their environmental implications.
Explain the principles of the zero-waste machine learning approach and how
it differs from traditional model optimization methods such as quantizati
on or pruning.Identify and discuss practical opportunities to apply zero-w
aste principles to improve the efficiency and sustainability of AI systems
in academic or industrial contexts.Recommended Mastery Level / Prerequisi
tes:Target audience: Participants with general awareness of artificial int
elligence or data science concepts.Prerequisites: Basic understanding of h
ow machine learning models operate (for example\, familiarity with neural
networks at a conceptual level).Technical level: Introductory to intermedi
ate\, suitable for non-specialists and decision-makers interested in susta

The rapid growth of AI has the potential to aid decarbonisation and help

DESCRIPTION:\n	This consultation seeks views on how the government can e
nsure the UK’s legal framework for AI and copyright supports the UK crea
tive industries and AI sector together. This consultation closes at 23:59
on 25 February 2025. \n\n\n\n	About the consultation\n\n\n\n	Two major st
rengths of the UK economy are its creative industries and AI sector. Both
are essential to drive economic growth and deliver the government’s Plan
for Change.\n\n\n\n	The government is determined to build on the strength
s of the UK AI sector\, and will set out an ambitious roadmap leveraging A
I to grow the economy and improve public services through the AI Opportuni
ties Action Plan.\n\n\n\n	The government also recognises the continued eco
nomic and cultural contributions of our world-leading creative industries.
\n\n\n\n	Copyright is a key pillar of our creative economy. It exist
s to help creators control the use of their works and allows them to seek
payment for it. However\, the widespread use of copyright material for tra
ining AI models has presented new challenges for the UK’s copyright fram
ework\, and many rights holders have found it difficult to exercise their
rights in this context. It is important that copyright continues to suppor
t the UK’s world-leading creative industries and creates the conditions
for AI innovation that allows them to share in the benefits of these new t
echnologies.\n\n\n\n	This consultation seeks views on proposals to deliver
against the government’s objectives for this area\, which are:\n\n\n\n
boosting trust and transparency between sectors\, by ensuring AI developer
s provide right holders with greater clarity about how they use their mate
rial.\n\n	enhancing right holders’ control over whether or not their wor
ks are used to train AI models\, and their ability to be paid for its use
where they so wish.\n\n	ensuring AI developers have access to high-quality
material to train leading AI models in the UK and support innovation acro
ss the UK AI sector.\n\n	Additionally\, the consultation addresses other e
merging issues\, including copyright protection for computer-generated wor
ks\, and the issue of digital replicas.\n\n\n\n	As AI evolves rapidly\, th
e UK’s response must adapt. The consultation is an opportunity for anyon
e with an interest in these issues to share their views and provide eviden
ce regarding the economic impact of these proposals. During the consultati
on\, we will also run wider engagement activity to help ensure that the fu
ll range of views is heard.\n\n\n\n	This consultation will run for 10 week
	s. It commences on 17 December 2024 and will close on 25 February 2025.\n\
